Coloured Glasses: Intercultural workshops for young people
focussing on empowerment, european citizenship and identity through non-formal education

YFU Flanders organizes Coloured Glasses in local communities in the entire Flanders region to promote intercultural awareness among young people. Our Coloured Glasses are each focussing on a different societal issue, and are suitable for all young from the age of 14 to 20.

YFU Flanders wants to make young people who take part in our Coloured Glasses aware of various aspects of intercultural communication, such as identity, stereotypes, etc. Coloured Glasses are specifically aimed at educating young people about cultural differences and the importance of respecting and appreciating these differences by means of non-formal education. Young people who participate in Coloured Glasses will experience simulation settings where a plethora of societal, contemporary issues are tackled in a safe space. These simulations are accompanied by an in debt debriefing of what happened both on an intellectual and an emotional level. Our ultimate goal is to create more understanding for the world and for others by supporting a spirit of solidarity and cooperation.

Description of position

Planning of workshops taking place both during and outside of office hours.

    Communication with all sorts of institutions and organizations to discuss the details with the contact person (date, location, size and age of participant group, preferred theme of the simulation) and book the Coloured Glasses sessions.

    Recruit, train and assign volunteers to facilitate the Coloured Glasses.

    Prepare the required sets of Coloured Glasses for the simulations. This might need some creative thinking and working with materials at hand.

Participation in Coloured Glasses workshops and document the process of facilitation for later evaluation of simulations. This might lead to other simulations being included in the circulations and thus expanding our range of possible simulations.

Follow-up of workshops and contact with organizations.

    Building customer relations with the organization to create a network of returning customers, making them stakeholders in the project.

    Keep track of the filled out evaluation and registration forms returned by the facilitators. 

    Document the progress within the project and learn more about subsidized projects such as this one.

Optional tasks, these result from a professional work environment and office behavior.

    Taking part in YFU volunteer activities. Organized by YFU volunteers.

    Depending upon your skills, interests and ideas, there is room for a wide variety of creative tasks.

Qualifications

Proficiency in Dutch or Flemish is a plus. Mastering the Dutch language is essential for your communication tasks. Upon your arrival in Flanders you will enroll in a language course.

Experience with intercultural exchange of any type is expected to guarantee a sense of belonging.

Experienced in non-formal education or a pedagogical background and willingness to practice these abilities is a plus.
